Wilbur Whateley by Weatherduck Wilbur Whateley by Weatherduck
"Below the waist, though, it was the worst; for here all human resemblance left off and sheer phantasy began."

Indeed yes.

This is my depiction of Wilbur Whateley from H.P. Lovecraft's "The Dunwich Horror", in which every inch of him is described in great detail. So I had no trouble in portraying him accurately (note the strange chinlessness of the Whateley family).

If you know the story, you'll recognise Dr. Dee's Necronomicon, and the pistol Wilbur carries everywhere he goes to protect him from dogs.

I was surprised at how few other artists have depicted Wilbur. He is such a memorable character, AND a creation of Lovecraft, the father of the horror genre no less! However, :iconhigherdepths: does Wilbur great justice.

Really great work!! The reviewer below is right, you should try to get your work published, it's top notch!

I love especially how almost sweetly he smiles ...

This is fantastic! I had a hard time imagine Wilbur in his most beastly form when reading the story, there were so many grotesque details to get my head around!
But this is so cool! I think this is exactly what Lovecraft had in mind!
Wonderful!

I'm an enormous fan of the Mythos, and this is definitely one of the best likenesses I've ever seen. I can't thank you enough for this.

Good rendition of Wilbur's bizarre anatomy. I don't imagine him as wearing clothes so shabby like that.

That's alot closer to how I picture him than most illustrations I've seen!

The thing is, I imagine he is like, two-in-one, so to speak: like a King in a deck of cards, where there are two kings, one upside-down? When the text describes eyes on his hips (damn, that's creepy) and an unformed mouth or throat on the tip of the tail, I can't help but imagine that THAT is what Wilbur was supposed to be, but it didn't develop as much as the human above.

So, I image he'd walk lurching like a T-rex (or try not to, so he wouldn't draw so much attention), as if his ass was as much of a head as his, um, head. With huge clothes on top.

Anyway, I like this. Not many artists remember the "chinless, goatish" description.

Oh, those crotch-tentacles look so...happy!

It's always nice to see a fellow HP Lovecraft fan here, and you did an awesome job of capturing Wilbur Whateley in all his horrible detail. =D

Oohh, how beautiful, I hope you are already painting for children's books? Where did you learn to color like this? If a magican is willing to tell his tricks in this case? =D

 I have never illustrated a book in my life. Nobody knows about me :depressed:... As for the colouring, I've just taught myself over the past two years or so, and I don't really consider it publishable. But thankyou so much for calling me a magician!

^__^ Maybe you should really show your artworks to somebody (if that is what you want to do with your art) because I know that you are far more than normally talentated! :aww:
